POLICY 31: Urban tree canopy

This policy states:

Support local planning decisions to restore, enhance, and maintain the urban tree canopy. (Met Council)

What is a policy?
Policies are statements of intent and approach to regional issues or topics, independently and with partners.

Actions

(Met Council) or (Local Government) or (Met Council/Local Government) are tags indicating responsibility for implementing the activity. 

Conduct urban tree canopy assessments to identify priority areas for preservation, restoration, and maintenance efforts. (Met Council) 

Develop model urban forest management goals and strategies to protect and enhance the tree canopy, soil health, water quality, and overall biodiversity. (Met Council) 

Establish tree planting, preservation, and maintenance strategies at the local level. The Met Council will provide technical assistance, training, and resources to support local governments and residents. (Met Council/Local Government) 

Assess the adaptation, mitigation, and public health value of the regional urban tree canopy to support local level decision-making and policy development. (Met Council)  

Support species diversity and climate adaptive planting on public and private land, including support for management of Emerald Ash Borer. To support local initiatives, the Met Council will provide technical assistance and funding through the tree planting grant program. (Met Council/Local Government)
